The African Platform on Access to Information (APAI)
The APAI was initiated in 2009 in order to found a campaign to improve Access to Information in Africa in combination with the 20th anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration on Press Freedom.
Based on an organisational core group with expertise in topics related to Access to Information and Freedom of Expression together with a working group which includes the following parties:
- Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC)
- Article 19 (East and West Africa)
- Highway Africa (HA)
- Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)
- Media Foundation of West Africa (MFWA).
- Media Rights Agenda (MRA)
- The African Editors Forum (TAEF)
The main goals of the group are targeted to:
- Develop a campaign for Access to Information to educate the government, civil society, media stakeholders and public citizens to know about their right to access information
- Creating and maintaining international and regional partnerships with organisations, civil and media stakeholders
- Create a draft of regional declaration for principles of Access to Information
- Controlling national governments to ensure that national Access to Information is given
- Celebrate the September 28 every year as a Call to Right to Information day
- Holding the Pan African Conference on Access to Information to bring organisations and experts around the globe together and see the adoption and signing of a Regional Declaration
